Kurzzusammenfassung

Goals of Science Communication

The increase of science communication activities conducted by a wide variety of science communication actors, makes the question what goals science communication should aim to achieve all the more pertinent. In order to design science communication activities that are appropriate for specific target groups a clear formulation of goals is indispensable. However, too often goals are being discarded as trivial in both science communication research and practice and there is lack of useful and systematic approaches to define them.

Methodology and Findings

In the framework of this analysis, the Impact Unit proposes such a systematic approach and applies it in an exemplary fashion in a qualitative content analysis. In total 120 documents by key actors of institutional science communciation in Germany were analysed. In order to be able to analyse the documents with regard to the goals of science communication, a systematic classification of these goals was developed. The results clearly show that the actors tend to favor science communication geared towards the common good and towards creating a dialogue between science and the public. Influencing opinions or transmitting information is being regarded as much less relevant.
